HC Media

The following pieces were awards won in just the HC Media Department.

HCTV6: Outstanding Veteran Sports Commentator, Fall 2012

HCTV6 gives awards for a news crewmember and rookie and veteran anchors, as well as a crewmember and a rookie and veteran commentator for sports broadcasts. Kirk won outstanding crewmember for sports broadcasts 3 years in a row, then in fall 2012 Kirk won outstanding veteran commentator, primarily for his role in commentating HC volleyball.

In addition, Kirk filled in for a soccer broadcast and a couple basketball broadcasts. Here’s one of the basketball games Kirk commentated.

KFKX: Best Air Personality Award 2011

KFKX awards are given by the station manager and collaborated with the faculty advisor. In the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 school years, Kirk won this award back-to-back. A station manager runs the station for a full school year before turning it over to their successor, so Kirk won this award twice with 2 different station managers.

Luckily, a clip was saved from Kirk’s solo show, Kirkcenter. Keep in mind, this was during the NFL lockout in spring of 2011. Kirk is a big hockey fan, and is still unhappy about how little press the NHL gets after the lockout of 2004-2005 took the entire season.

KFKX: Sports Commentator of the Year 2012-2013

This award is nearly identical to the HCTV veteran sports commentator. The only difference is that Kirk did not commentate any basketball games for the radio. Otherwise, all volleyball broadcasts were simulcast on TV and radio and the soccer game Kirk did was also simulcast. In addition, Kirk commentated a couple softball games when the softball commentators were unavailable.

Here is one of the most exciting games Kirk was able to broadcast in four years. Hastings College and Oklahoma Baptist went 5 sets in an instant classic.

Note: the match ends at roughly 2:20:00 of this clip. The rest is regular KFKX programming.

Kirk also won a couple other HC Media awards that don’t have videos associated with them.  As mentioned above, Kirk was 3-time HCTV Outstanding Crew Member winner before taking the commentator award as a senior.

In addition, Kirk won the KFKX award for best show intro for Kirkcenter. Unfortunately, due to a virus on the radio’s external hard drive with all its archives, the clip was lost before Kirk could back it up.

The KFKX station manager also can do some sillier awards if they so choose, and the 2010-11 station manager gave Kirk what he called the “Shameless Award,” as Kirk took every opportunity to shamelessly plug Kirkcenter, Tuesday nights at 9. It turned into an on-going joke between the two until both students graduated.
